Karnatak University Dharwad

India once upon a time was having one of the best educational institutes like Nalanda. As we are in 21st Century so can we work together to make some institutes like Nalanda. Here I want to introduce one of the Indian Universities i.e. Karnatak University Dharwad. It is 2nd oldest University in Karnataka State. The first Vice-Chancellor was Mr. R.A.Jahagirdar. Later Dr. D.C.Pavate put his necessary effort in building the right vision for the University. In honor to this eminent visionary the University Campus is named as Pavate Nagar. The seeds of establishing a college in North Karnataka is very old since 1876. Nearly around 1909 the real efforts amalgamated through the efforts of many eminent visionaries like Late Shri.R.B.Rodda, Late Shri.Diwan Bahadur Srinivas Rao Rodda, Late Shri.Rao Bahadur Rudragouda Artal and Late Shri.M.B.Choubal. On 20th June 1917 the then Governor of Bombay laid the foundation stone to establish Karnataka College. The science wing of this college was established through the efforts of Late Sir. Siddappa Kambli. After the establishment of Karnatak University at Dharwad the Karnatak College was bifurcated into two sister colleges as “Karnatak Science College” & “Karnatak Arts College”   sharing   a common campus and other campus amenities for administrative purpose. Late Dr.G.S.Paramasivaiah, a student of the Nobel-laureate Sir.C.V.Raman, was the first Principal of the Karnatak Science College.

Karnatak University Act 1949 paved the way for the establishment of the said University. It became a statutory University on 1st March 1950. It covers Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri and Uttar Kannada districts. The University is spread across 888 acres. The emblem of the University consists of papal tree at the centre, an open book, a bull, a rising sun and saying Wisdom is Guru.It has around 47 departments ranging from Mathematics to Marine Biology to Sports. It has established University Public School in 1964 for the benefit of school children. Karnatak Science College famously known as KCD which has produced eminent personalities in all walks of life (Eg. Shri. P.B.Gajendragadakar, Nandan Nilekani, Dr. M.I.Savadatti, Girish Karnad etc). The KCD is accredited by NAAC with "A" Grade, with CGPA 3.26 in the 4 point Scale. The college has a governing council is headed by the Vice-Chancellor of Karnatak University, Syndicate Members, two staff members of the college and the Principal as secretary. It guides and regulates all the activities of the college.

The University has 3 PG centers at Haveri (42 acres), Gadag (32 acres) and Karwar (6 acres). The University has been awarded UPE status i.e.,‘University with Potential for Excellence’ (UPE) by the University Grants Commission. The main campus in Pavate Nagar comprsing 750 acres houses 50 Departments, Central Library, Auditorium, Stadium, Badminton Hall with Gymnasium, Employment Information and Guidance Bureau, Students Home, Academic Staff College, Health Centre, Prasaranga, SC/ST/CAT I/BCM/Cells, 2 Guest Houses, 2 Banks, a Post Ofice, a Canteen, Printing Press and Museums in Kannada Research Institute Museum and Museum of Animals and Plants in addition to a Primary School.
